Self-Expression and Identity

Dear L&L Family,
What a truly joyful and heartwarming way to wrap up our annual Month of the Young Child! This final week was the perfect celebration of everything this special month represents: community, creativity, connection, and, most importantly, the incredible spirit of childhood!
We had so much fun leaning into each day’s theme together. Sports Day kicked things off with team spirit and excitement, as children proudly wore their favorite jerseys and colors, cheering each other on and celebrating movement and teamwork. Crazy Hair Day brought endless smiles and laughter, with some truly impressive (and creative!) hairstyles that reflected each child’s unique personality. On Animal / Safari Day, our classrooms transformed into playful jungles filled with imagination, as children explored the world of animals through dress-up, storytelling, and pretend play.
One of the most special moments of the week was Donuts at Drop-Off, where we loved welcoming you into the classrooms to start the day with a sweet treat and a shared moment together. And we couldn’t have asked for a better ending than Popsicles at Pick-Up: we invite you to join us this afternoon in this simple, joyful way of celebrating the close of such a meaningful month side by side!
As we look back on the Month of the Young Child as a whole, we are filled with so much gratitude. This month is always a beautiful reminder of why early childhood matters so deeply: because within these classrooms, we see curiosity, kindness, confidence, creativity, and connection growing every single day!
Thank you for showing up, participating, engaging, and celebrating alongside us. Whether it was joining us for special events, helping your child prepare for themed days, or simply being part of our community, your involvement makes this experience so much richer for everyone.
And while we’re wrapping up this year’s celebration, we are already looking forward to doing it all again next year: maybe even bigger and brighter, but just as meaningful!
As we shared last week, so many of these experiences tie beautifully into the ongoing development of self-expression and identity. Throughout this month, we saw children confidently show us who they are through their choices, their creativity, their voices, and their interactions with others.
When children are encouraged to express themselves freely, they build confidence in their ideas and abilities, a sense of pride in who they are, emotional awareness and communication skills, and respect and appreciation for others’ differences. These are lifelong skills, and it is such a privilege to help nurture them during these early years. When children are given the space to express themselves freely, whether through clothing choices, imaginative play, art, movement, or storytelling, they are constantly exploring who they are, what they like and value, how they feel, and how they connect with others.
At L&L, self-expression is woven into everything we do. This past month, it came to life in so many joyful ways:
- Choosing their own unique outfits & hairdos, and proudly sharing them with friends
- Engaging in imaginative superhero or animal play, and storytelling
- Expressing ideas through art, movement, and conversation
- Exploring nature and sharing observations and wonderings
Our teachers create environments where children feel safe to be themselves, encouraging their ideas, validating their feelings, and celebrating their individuality.
At home, you can continue nurturing this important skill in simple, everyday ways:
· Give children choices.
Let them choose outfits, activities, or books; it builds confidence in their preferences.
· Encourage creative outlets.
Art, music, pretend play, and storytelling are all powerful forms of expression.
· Listen and validate.
Show genuine interest in their thoughts, ideas, and feelings.
· Celebrate individuality.
Remind them that being different is something special and valued.
· Model self-expression.
Share your own thoughts and creativity; it shows them it’s safe to do the same!

- Monday: Notes, drawings, or poems
- Tuesday: Favorite sweet treat or snack
- Wednesday: Flowers
- Thursday: Favorite beverage
- Friday: We kindly invite you to contribute to our staff brunch (additional details and Signup.com link will be provided by each site’s director; please adjust this accordingly)
You’ll also find each teacher’s “Favorite Things” sheet posted outside their classroom door for inspiration.
These gestures, big or small, mean so much to us. They help our teachers feel seen, appreciated, and celebrated for the incredible care and dedication they bring to your children each day. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for our students to take part in expressing gratitude and recognizing the people who support them.
As we wrap up this beautiful chapter and look ahead to the next, we want to say thank you once again.
Thank you for your partnership, your trust, and for sharing your incredible children with us! This past month was full of magic, and it wouldn’t have been the same without you.
Here’s to all the growth, joy, and connection still to come.
