Connection and Emotional Security

Dear L&L Family,
We hope all of our incredible mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and mother figures had a beautiful and love-filled Mother’s Day weekend that just passed! While no single day could ever fully capture the depth of appreciation we have for everything you do, we still wanted to take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge the endless care, patience, strength, and love that you pour into your children each and every day!
Motherhood in the early years is magical, heartwarming, exhausting, emotional, joyful, messy, and everything in between…sometimes all well before 8:00 a.m. There are countless unseen moments behind the scenes: the comforting hugs, the repeated bedtime songs, the packing of lunches, the middle-of-the-night wakeups, the emotional juggling, the gentle reassurances, the endless mental notes, and the unwavering presence children rely on every day. It is such important work, and we hope you know how deeply valued and appreciated you are, not only by your children, but by all of us at L&L as well!
Over the past couple of weeks, our classrooms have been overflowing with sweet conversations, thoughtful artwork, and meaningful moments centered around the important people in our children’s lives. From proudly sharing stories about their families to creating heartfelt keepsakes and practicing words of love and appreciation, the children brought so much warmth and sincerity into our classrooms leading up to and after the Mother’s Day weekend. It has been such a beautiful reflection of the deep bonds, trust, and connection that help children feel safe, supported, and truly known.
And that brings us so naturally into this week’s topic: connection and emotional security.
At the heart of early childhood development, there is one incredibly important foundation, and that is safe, loving relationships. Before children can confidently explore the world around them, they first need to feel secure within it. Strong emotional connections help children develop confidence and independence, emotional regulation skills, trust and resilience, healthy social relationships, and a sense of belonging and self-worth. When children feel emotionally safe and connected to the important adults in their lives, they are more willing to take risks, try new things, solve problems, and navigate challenges. Connection is what gives children the courage to grow.
At L&L, relationships are at the center of everything we do. While curriculum, routines, and activities are all important, we know that meaningful learning happens best within strong, trusting relationships.
Every day, our teachers intentionally build connections through:
- Warm greetings and meaningful goodbyes
- Responsive caregiving and emotional support
- Playful interactions and shared laughter
- One-on-one conversations and active listening
- Comforting children through big feelings
- Celebrating each child’s unique personality and interests
These seemingly small moments help children feel seen, valued, and safe, and those feelings become the foundation for growth across all developmental areas.
The good news is that connection doesn’t require elaborate plans or perfect parenting. Often, it’s built through the simplest moments:
· Be present during small routines.
Bedtime, meals, bath time, and car rides can become powerful moments of connection.
· Follow your child’s lead in play.
Even just 10 uninterrupted minutes of child-led play can fill their emotional cup tremendously.
· Use eye contact and physical affection.
Hugs, cuddles, smiles, and sitting close all communicate safety and love.
· Validate feelings.
Children don’t need every feeling fixed—they need to know their feelings are accepted and understood.
· Create rituals.
Special songs, handshake routines, bedtime traditions, or morning snuggles build security and predictability.
As usual, here are some wonderful books about love, connection, and family bonds:

As we close this week’s feature on connection and emotional security, we also wanted to share a short but incredibly powerful video that beautifully reflects the impact caring, connected adults can have in a child’s life. In the midst of busy schedules and everyday routines, it serves as such a meaningful reminder that relationships truly are at the heart of learning, confidence, and growth.
We highly encourage you to take a few moments to watch “Every Kid Needs a Champion” by Rita Pierson | TED Talk. Rita Pierson’s message is heartfelt, inspiring, and deeply aligned with the work we strive to do every day at L&L. Her reminder that children thrive best when they feel seen, supported, encouraged, and genuinely believed in is something that resonates so strongly within early childhood education, and within the partnerships we build together with all of you. It is a beautiful watch for parents, caregivers, and educators alike, and one we hope leaves you feeling encouraged, appreciated, and inspired.
As we move through this busy and beautiful season of the school year, we hope you continue to give yourselves grace and recognize the incredible impact you have on your children simply through your love, presence, and care. The secure relationships children build in these early years become the roots from which confidence, resilience, empathy, and learning grow.
Thank you for allowing us to be part of your village and for trusting us with your children each day. We are so grateful for the strong partnerships we share with our families—and especially this week, we celebrate all the amazing moms and caregivers who make our community so special!
